The Color Red
Red, red, red! Whether it’s seen in a beautiful sunset, a fragrant rose, or a fast Ferrari driving down the street, red is a powerful part of the color spectrum of our everyday lives.
The color red has many symbolic meanings around the world, and because of that can be considered a color of many extremes. It symbolizes both passionate love and extreme hate, danger and adventure. In some cultures it’s considered good luck while in others it means death and violence. It is as energetic as it is primal.
Because of the many emotional associations, the color red is often used in photography to help convey a certain feeling or a subtle sense. Meanwhile it is also perfect for accenting a certain element of the frame as it is the second most visible color to the human eye (second only to Yellow).
Red throughout history.
Historically red has been one of the first colors to be expressed outside of black and White. Ancient cave paintings used red, and the color was easily accessible throughout the ages as a pigment through natural means. The Aztecs were some of the first to truly exploit the use of the cochineal bug in the use of dye for clothing and other means. This bug was later traded overseas and, like many bright pigments at the time, was a treat only for the clothes of the very wealthy. Red was seen as chic, flashy, and expensive.
